The day started with a good continental breakfast at our b&b, then a play at the park in Perth before setting off to the highlands, via Balmoral and Tomintoul.
Breathtaking scenery of mountains, rivers and the odd ski station unfolded before us.
We did, however, have a disaster. I’d stayed at a campsite in Fort Augustus a couple of years ago and loved it. Flat pitches, well maintained and close to the loch, village and the canal. Just perfect! I hadn’t managed to book online, and as we arrived there was a massive SITE CLOSED sign at the entrance. It’s been taken over this year by a company looking to put caravans on it. Very disappointing.
After driving toward Inverness and stopping at a couple of sites we found a decent one with clean facilities just by Drumnadrochit. Fish and chips in the rain before it cleared up. There’s a riding school onsite so MLW and the YCM have been and found the horses. And a hen.
We’ll hit Fort Augustus tomorrow.
It’s not been a total disappointment. We now own a ‘Nessie at night’ fridge magnet.
