After the dramatic night thanks to storm Hector, we were tired but fine this morning. I’d had a rubbish night up and down putting pegs back in, and MLW had been quite concerned about the ominous creaking from the nearby trees so had had very little sleep. The YCM did best of all, she was late to bed having needed a good deal of reassurance and stories but slept until 7.30am.
Unfortunately, the wind changed direction at 7.30am. The tent porch was being flattened by the gusts so we quickly evacuated the YCM to the car and set about emptying and packing away the tent. Trees were bent double, the tent nearly snatched itself up into the air at one point, it took me and MLW to hold it down to get a peg in. Then one of us had to hold up the porch and stand on the peg while we emptied. On the plus side, it wasn’t raining.
With everything randomly packed away and shoved in the facilities block and MLW lying on the tent whilst it was on the floor we were met by the campsite owner who was walking her dogs and offered us the camping pod. Oh yes! We’re in the comfort of an insulated wooden hut tonight, so hopefully we’ll all catch up on sleep.
The wind has gone now, thank goodness, and been replaced by drizzle. We’re on the ferry tomorrow so are hoping for very little wind then, too, and a smooth crossing.
Today has been fairly restful, we had a late breakfast at Morrison’s then YCM and MLW went to the Ryan centre swimming. It’s a great pool, with swimming pools and a fun section including slides, bubbles and a crocodile. True to form the YCM was in the pool well over an hour and made a friend. We had lunch in the leisure centre cafe (YCM had a little play with her new friend) and then back (via the ice cream shop) to set up the pod.
Pod set up MLW and the YCM set off to a nearby farm to see the white cow and her calf. They came home having seen them, and some sheep being shorn. They’d also found a rather sad and sorry for himself sheep at the bottom of a chilly ditch and alerted the farmer, who duly went and picked him up in the van.
After an early tea and a cheeky watch of part of the World Cup (yes, the pod has a TV, but still no mobile reception!) it’s off to bed.
Alarms are set for the morning ferry to Northern Ireland tomorrow. Many of the NI sites only do caravans or camping pods so we are in a pod there too for the first couple of nights.
