11 June 2018 - Gartmore

We got up, breakfasted and packed the car and started our trip south.   We passed dramatic scenery including lochs, waterfalls, mountain passes and ridges (including the one I fell off), via Fort William and Glencoe. We stopped for a break at the Green Welly Stop.

We came down the length of Loch Lomond before rounding the bottom and heading for Gartmore.

The Cobeland campsite is exceptional. It is probably the best run campsite I have visited. Everywhere is immaculate and there are children’s adventure trails, nearby woodland walks and lovely flat pitches. The only down side is MIDGES! They love me, but it’s not mutual.

The YCM went off to play on the handy play park whilst MLW and I put the tent up and sorted stuff out.  Then, they both went off to play leaving me to cook dinner.  Staying in one place trying to chop onions whilst being attacked by midges was awful. I’ve been midged worse than this in the past but it’s just so unpleasant.

After lunch MLW and the YCM went for a woodland walk to the village. They came back after taking a wrong turn somewhere near Gartmore house. The YCM asked if I would drive them there. I left the washing up waiting and drove into Gartmore. A pleasant village but the shop was closed so there was no chance of an ice cream.  We turned around and headed for the other place, Aberfoyle.  This is a much bigger place, but seems down on its luck with a few boarded up shops amidst the Scottish wool centre, sweet shops and pubs. It did have a new Co-op so we restocked our cupboard, bought tomorrow’s lunch and got some ice creams too.

After a short walk down the high street (no ice creams to be consumed in the car) it was clear that the midges did not stop at built up areas. Even the town was full of the little blighters.

We returned to the tent, sorted ourselves out and resolved to move on tomorrow.  Such a shame as this is a great site with lots of things to do. Still, onward to the coast!
