2 June 2018 - Buxton

We had a good cooked breakfast courtesy of our hotel, then off to the playpark in the nearby Buxton parkland. It’s very well equipped and the YCM (Youngest Crew Member, so called after ably assisting our boating in 2014) enjoyed being spun at breakneck speeds by some other children. It was to be the first of four visits to the park today! The duck pond had such attractions as ducklings, goslings and nesting moorhens.

Upper Buxton had a market on today which we thought might be worth a look, so we walked up the steep hill. The market was small and reviewed quickly but on the way back to the spa centre we happened upon the museum and art gallery. It was a surprising treasure! We all found something appealing. I enjoyed the ‘Victorian study’, MLW enjoyed the fabric and textile art and the YCM enjoyed the roaring bear, dressing up as a Roman soldier and the sheep in the ‘hills’ exhibit. The museum sold railway postcards....so we headed off to the railway after having lunch at a religious cafe which offered prayers (if you wanted them) alongside cheese toasties.

The huge viaduct in the town is not used by the modern trains and there was an exhibit in the station saying they’d tried to get a steam heritage railway set up but hadn’t managed to gain the needed permissions. This did not dampen the enjoyment of watching a train ‘change ends’ and set off (Buxton is a dead end) and another train come into the station.

A fish and chip supper in the open air cemented our holiday feeling and the day was rounded off by the final playpark visit of the day. It’s cooler today so hopefully we’ll all sleep better.

We apologise for the lack of photos but Google’s strengths are not in writing software that is easily useable on an iPad.
